SACT Flag Raisings

In April of 2008 we celebrate The Kingdom of the Netherlands. A broad array of events will take place. Come and experience the pomp and patriotism of a Flag Raising Ceremony, the Coronation of Queen Azalea and her Court, the Parade of Nations, Queen’s Interantional Ball, a Golf Classic and much more. We hope you will start marking your calendar for these fantastic events. Please continue to check back, as we continue to plan, so that you will have specifics!

Have you ever attended a Flag Raising at SACT Headquarters? Chances are, you haven’t. You may not even know that these “cultural gems” even exist; but they do! My suggestion to you is give the next Flag Raising a try. We recently had a Flag Raising for Bulgaria and it made me think a great deal about our NATO community. There we stood on March 3rd celebrating Bulgaria, shoulder to shoulder with serving NATO members, NATO wives, and local citizens with ties to Bulgaria. It was wonderful. You would have loved it! Flag raisings are a great way to learn about the 26 NATO member nations as well as the Partnership for Peace and the Mediterranean
Dialog nations. These unique events celebrate our diversity and recognize our individual national days.
Everyone is invited to come to Flag Raisings; you only need your car gate pass (sticker) and ID card to enter the base. They begin at 1000 hrs but you should be standing in front of SACT Headquarters by 0945 hrs.
Parking can be difficult so getting there early is a good idea. Often, the celebrating nation will hand out flags, information pages, or other interesting things. What follows is a mix of marching,music, information, and national pride. The entire event lasts only approximately 35-45 minutes. You will then be invited to continue the celebration in the SACT Officers’ Mess while enjoying coffee, muffins and catching up with friends.
The next opportunity to experience a Flag Raising takes place on April 14th. This will be the Azalea Flag Raising celebrating The Netherlands as the “Most Honored Nation”. This is a really fun event and an excellent introduction to Flag Raisings. After that, I encourage you to attend as many Flag Raisings as you can. We seem to average 8 to 10 events a year and each nation loves to have an enthusiastic crowd in attendance. Flag Raisings are a wonderful opportunity to come together and support each other as we celebrate our nations when we are far from home.
